The Takoma Mandoleers (named for the area of Takoma Park, Maryland where they rehearsed for many years) Orchestra was formed in 1923 by a group of players from the older Nordica Mandolin Club. The late Herman von Bernewitz, one of the founders, conducted the Mandoleers continuously from 1928 until 1993. Dave A. Ruppert, also a member of the Baltimore Mandolin Orchestra, is presently their conductor and principal arranger.
The Mandoleers now rehearse each Tuesday evening at Clarendon United Methodist Church in Arlington Virginia. Visitors are always welcome. The orchestra's repertoire includes a diverse selection of the traditional mandolin/guitar orchestras (which flourished early in this century) as well as traditional Classical pieces and modern tunes arranged for the orchestra.
