The Regina Mandolin Orchestra of Regina, Saskatchewan Canada officially emerged as a unique performing ensemble in 1988. The members of the RMO have come from many musical backgrounds and experiences. Several musicians have performed together in other groups and have traveled extensively to perform in concerts, festivals and stage presentations.
Although the musical sound of the orchestra is based on the mandolin, the orchestra is both supplemented and complemented by accordion, flute, guitar, violin and percussion. Other ethnic musical instruments are often used. This allows performance of a wide variety of musical styles; from world-wide folk music to classical works, Christmas music, and contemporary popular tunes. The orchestra always enjoys the challenge of playing new repertoire and performing in public.
The Regina Mandolin Orchestra has performed at many functions and venues. Some notable appearances have been at: Opening of the Legislature Formal Banquet; conventions of the Saskatchewan Organization for Heritage Languages; Cabinet Ministers' Formal Receptions and multicultural events including performances in communities around the province and at many hospitals and seniors lodges.
Along with orchestra activities the Regina Mandolin Orchestra has also established a teaching program for adults.
