The Providence Mandolin Orchestra is committed to rehearsing and performing original works by contemporary composers. In the past few years, the PMO has given premieres of works by Victor Kioulaphides, Clarice Assad, Francine Trester, Owen Hartford, and Annette Kruisbrink. The PMO has been host to numerous international ensembles including Het Consort, the Toulouse Mandolin Orchestra, Carlo Aonzo, Tamara Volkskaya, Simon Mayer, Ensemble Roggenstein, Orquestra Citta de Brescia, and others. The PMO’s tours have taken the orchestra to Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, and France. The summer of 2008 will see the PMO concertizing in Toulouse, Amsterdam, and Wolle. The PMO has aso presented the world premiere of Giuseppe Pettine’s Mandolin Concerto in its original orchestration, featuring soloist Richard Walz.
The Providence Mandolin Orchestra has been active since its founding by Hibbard Perry in 1973. Mr. Perry was succeeded as Music Director by Mark Davis, who has conducted the Orchestra since 1989. Mr. Davis is a guitarist and mandolinist, who directs the classical guitar ensemble program at the Wheeler School in Providence, RI, and performs regularly in duo concerts with Beverly Davis.
PRACTICE PLACE / TIME: Tuesday nights, 7:30 - 9:30 PM, from Sept. 1 - June 1. Membership in the orchestra is by audition, and all inquiries should be addressed to Mark Davis.
