The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra celebrated it's historic 60th Anniversary on Sunday, May 5, 2002 with a Spring Concert entitled "The Stars of the Orchestra". Born sixty years ago as the Orange and Vicinities Mandolin Society, the modern Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra has been under the direction of Gabriel L. Nevola for the past twenty-nine years. Comprised of forty-six volunteer musicians from northern and central New Jersey, the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra is the largest mandolin orchestra in the Metropolitan area today. Its members play not only the mandolin, but also the bandurya, mandola, mandocello, mandobass, classical guitar, bass guitar, string bass, flute, and drums.

The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra presents programs, which combine classical, American and Italian popular songs, Broadway, and contemporary music. Many of the musical selections are originally arranged for the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra by Mr. Nevola himself, a veteran performer, composer, conductor, and music teacher. At their spring concerts the orchestra has featured many special guests artists such as, Barry Mitterhoff, Duo Capriccioso (Getrud Troster, mandolin, and Michael Troster, guitar) and Tamara Volskaya and Anatoly Trofimov.

The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra, with its unique sound, performs concerts throughout the metropolitan area several times a year, and its annual May concert at the Presbyterian Church-on-the Green. Past appearances of the Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra include Westchester Community College, the New Jersey Italian Experience in Jersey City, and the Slice of Heaven Italian Festival at Seton Hall University, the Bloomfield Harvest Fest, Oakside Bloomfield Cultural Center, and Waterloo Village in addition to performances for various social functions and nursing homes/senior residencies. The Bloomfield Mandolin Orchestra was also invited to participate in the Charles Ives: "The Commuter" centennial academic conference and celebration, held at the Presbyterian Church-on-the Green in Bloomfield.
