The Aurora Mandolin Orchestra is comprised of players from all walks of life and from various parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. Their objective is to promote and encourage the love of fine music and to share the satisfaction and enjoyment that comes from participation in and appreciation of this musical art form. As one of the few remaining mandolin orchestras in California, they have given public performances to thousands of music lovers. They are especially proud to have played at the San Francisco Symphony's festive opening night at Davies Hall in 1984.

Gino Pellegrini was the group's first Director and Concert Master since organizing the group in 1970. He began with only five players. Membership grew to as many as 36. He named the orchestra "Aurora" after the original and well-renowned Aurora Mandolin Orchestra located in San Francisco during the 1920's and 1930's. He has one of the largest collections of mandolin music available today.

Gino started playing the mandolin at a very young age. Self-taught to a great extent, he feels grateful to have played with the world-famous Andrini Brothers who helped him considerably in developing his technique on the mandolin. His virtuosity, exceptional tremelo and duo-style playing are truly gifts cherished and appreciated. Upon his untimely passing in 2006, conducting duties were assumed by Josephine ("Jo") Pellegrini.

The Aurora Mandolin Orchestra consists of mandolins, mandolas, guitars, bass, flute and accordion. Their musical programs are varied and include traditional, romantic, semi-classical, and ethnic music.

PRACTICE PLACE / TIME: Rehearsals every Wednesday at the Veteran's Memorial Senior Center in Redwood City, CA. Musicians and visitors and always welcome!
