| American Mandolin & Guitar Orchestra |
| Providence, RI |
The American Mandolin and Guitar Orchestra (AMGO), under the direction of Maestro Robert Paul Sullivan, is the large performance ensemble of the American Mandolin and Guitar Summer School (AMGuSS), hosted annually each June at Roger Williams University, Bristol RI. Originally the group existed only as part of AMGuSS, but in 2004, the group began to meet and perform concerts independently from the summer school. The group ranges from 25 players to nearly 50, depending on the availability of members and the geographic location of the concert.
AMGO includes students and faculty in performance, with members coming from all parts of the United States and Canada, and ranging in age from 17 to 70s. Before arriving in Bristol, students begin work on their orchestra music to be featured in the Grand Finale Concert. The thrill of the first rehearsal, even to previous participants, is always a great joy, as the quality and depth of sound in the group becomes evident to all who have been practicing their parts solo for the preceding month. Through daily rehearsals and sectionals, the orchestra develops during the week into a fine ensemble that headlines the Saturday night performance — an exciting night for all.
