GrecoMando Editions, an enterprise for the preservation and dissemination of the traditional mandolin music of Greece, presents its complete catalogue, which includes the following volumes to date:
IONIAN MANDOLINATA: The beautiful Ionian Islands, with their charming mix of native Greek and Italianate culture, have a long tradition of mandolin playing. This volume contains some of the most beloved songs of the 19th century, akin in style to the Neapolitan popular music of the same era.
This volume is also available as a duet for two mandolins; the two-mandolin version and the mandolin-and-guitar version can be combined in performance into a lovely trio, as can be seen and heard on this site: http://www.splogman.com/splusp/mandolinata1.html
ATHENIAN MANDOLINATA: Around the turn of the 19th to 20th century, the mandolin was the darling of Athenian music lovers. This volume contains late 19th – early 20th century “cantades”, popular songs that were sung by strolling musicians in the narrow streets of Plaka, the old city of Athens.
AEGEAN MANDOLINATA: From Rhodes to Crete, from Chios to Mykonos, the mandolin was the favorite musical companion of Aegean Islanders and all those who lived in the seaside towns along the coast. This volume is a suite of folk dances, joyful, spirited and expressive.
SINFONIA-OVERTURA Nº 2: A work by Nikolaos Mantzaros, the founder of "art music" in Greece, and graduate of the Naples Conservatory. This form of the Sinfonia is much like Rossini's overtures, with a dramatic, theatrical introduction, frolicsome up-tempo middle section, and cascading finale.
SINFONIA-OVERTURA Nº 5: As above. Again, in the style of early, Italian classicism, like the operatic overtures of Bellini. The two Sinfonias make excellent companion-pieces for performance, and sound like "mini-orchestras" for mandolin and guitar.
SENTIMENTALIA: A collection of lovely, sentimental songs from Belle Epoque Athens, that entered the popular repertoire from the operetta stage during the turn-of-the-century. An ideal performance-piece for casual occasions and musical gatherings.
ECHOES FROM MAGNA GRAECIA: A collection of soulful songs and spirited dances from the Greek-speaking villages of Southern Italy and Sicily, edited and arranged for mandolin and guitar.
ZAKYNTHIAN MANDOLINATA: An assortment of songs from Zakynthos, the southernmost of Greece's Ionian Islands. This is perhaps the sunniest, happiest, most cheerful music one can ever come across; easily playable and immediately memorable.
